Why I Created the MLK Jr. Day Special on Southern Official Radio

Martin Luther King Jr. Day comes and goes, and too often it’s treated like a moment instead of a movement. For me, that never sat right. This year, I wanted to do more than acknowledge the day — I wanted to create space for it.

I created the Southern Official Radio MLK Jr. Day Special because the dream isn’t something we can afford to remember only once a year. It’s something we have to revisit, protect, and recommit to — especially now.

We’re living in a time of constant turmoil. Division feels louder. Pressure feels heavier. And for many of us, it feels easier to become numb than hopeful. Every day brings another reminder of how fragile progress can be. Another moment where patience is tested. Another reason why it might feel safer to disengage.

But Dr. King never asked us to disengage. He asked us to stand.

The purpose of this programming block is simple: to remind us that the words mattered, the work mattered, and the dream still matters. Not as history, but as responsibility.

This wasn’t created as background noise. It was created as a pause — a moment to sit with the music, the speeches, and the legacy that continues to shape our lives whether we acknowledge it or not. Gospel, soul, reflection, resistance, and hope all live together in this space, because that’s how real life works.

On a personal level, this day hits close to home. Like many of you, I’ve faced moments where pushing forward felt exhausting. Times when the weight of responsibility, uncertainty, and life itself made stopping feel like the easier option. Building, creating, believing — none of it is easy in trying times.

But this music, these words, and this history remind me that perseverance isn’t optional. It’s necessary.

Southern Official Radio exists to honor culture with intention. This MLK Jr. Day Special is part of that mission — not to speak for the legacy, but to make room for it. To let it breathe. To let it speak. And to remind us that the dream was never finished business.

It’s ongoing. And so are we.
